The Fourth Utility and its Impact on you and the Green Movement.
FIX Consulting is your advocate! We understand Facilities and IT Infrastructure.
1.) The "Green" concept has moved beyond the energy-efficient data center.
Gartner, Inc. (the information technology research and advisory company), listed "IT for Green" as the 4th strategic technology and trend for 2010. This included more than "Green" for Data Centers. It is important to realize that the "Green" concept has moved beyond the energy-efficient data center, IT enables "Green" throughout the total enterprise.
According to Guido Jouret, the chief technology officer of Cisco's Emerging Technologies Group, Cisco came away with all of the opportunities associated with transformation of the nation's energy grid (otherwise referred to as the " Smart Grid".) Cisco realizes that in order for the "Smart Grid" to operate properly you need Intelligent information from the facility side of the Enterprise or, as Cisco references, the "Southside" of the Enterprise.
2) There is an Exponential Explosion of Facility Nodes.
Who Is watching what?
Today, for every two traditional IP Addresses or Data and Voice Nodes there are 4 to 6 Facility Nodes. With new technologies such as low power, and powerless wireless, the Facility Node count will triple in the next five years!
So, who has to watch all of those Facility Nodes? The answer is the IT Professional!
3) IT Will Run Facilities.
Traditionally facilities always report to and through the CFO. With the tremendous proliferation of "Facility Nodes," the IT Professional will now be responsible for the optimization of facilities. This is currently taking place were the data centers are the responsibility of the IT Professional. As buildings continue to develop into huge IT infrastructures, it only makes sense for the IT Professional to have that responsibility.
FIX Consulting is your resource for integrating and managing the Facility Nodes of your Information Technology systems. We are your advocate for the facility enterprise and how it relates to both the green movement and the proliferation of Facility Nodes. Let us guide you through the technology associated with the Fourth Utility.

As Americans are becoming more environmentally conscious, more religious groups are looking to make their worship spaces sustainable. The efforts range from small country congregations using energy-efficient bulbs to megachurches complying with complex green-building codes.
By going green, most worship buildings can cut their energy costs by 30 percent, said Jerry Lawson, of the Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star Congregations program. About 2,000 of the nearly 310,000 houses of worship in the U.S. participate in the EPA program.

As the recession grinds on, some consultants are finding an emerging outlet by updating older buildings from power hogs into green stewards. The trend is attracting a fresh round of eco-savvy tenants.
Chicago is home to two large projects, examples of advancing efforts to green up existing buildings. In early December, 172 buildings nationwide were certified under the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED for Existing Buildings Rating System, a program created in 2004. More than 2,000 other buildings are seeking to obtain such certification, according to the Washington, D.C.-based group.
